Hi,
From my experience fishing at Wairaka Rock It is a great place with huge potential for Kingfish and Snapper! I have fished this platform on the seaward side of the first big rock and burleyed up large amounts of baitfish in close and put out some live baits for kingfish! The more burley you can take there the better! 20kgs or more is a good amount to get some activity happening in close! There are large stingrays over 100kg that come in really close when you are there into the burley trail. My friend has hooked Kingfish off there and we had our livebaits chased by large Kingfish too. Staryline for snapper into the back of the burley trail and keep an eye out for the big Trevally that can be caught on unweighted bits of pilchard on small 1/0 hooks fished in the burley also.
Good luck and tight lines

We recently went for a walk around the Pukerua Bay area that you are talking about, however it was very rough seas and all we had were some smaller rods. We didn’t actually get the lines wet at all but it does look like a very interesting spot. I’d imagine it could become dodgy in really rough seas… I haven’t done any surfcasting around that area before, however it does look snaggy in areas. So i’m not to sure how well a sinker would work out there, if you had a perfect magical day where there was an easterly without any waves you could try a stray line with a ballon on it to take it out. Or maybe some sort of weighted floatation device to allow you to cast out… Around that area it looks to get quite deep, almost like a hole and i’m sure you would get Snapper swimming close to where the kelp is. It’s something i’m keen on trying out one day, it’s a nice walk around there and when I walked it I took my dog which he just loved – something I can’t do in our small boat
