Petone wharf

Went for a quick look see, and a spin down at petone wharf, got there, was a guy that was burleying so i thought id spin near the trail. after a few casts the guy went to cast his surfcasting rod, he positioned himself, rod behind his shoulder, lookin forward, he put all of his power into that cast, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!! , im standing there shocked at what ive just seen. He hadnt opened the bail arm, and the weight of the cast had taken line off the drag, about 10-15m… i look at him, expecting a shocked look on his face, but all i see, is a smile, and a nod, in my direction…. he tightens the line (and drag) and goes to sit down. so i carry on with my buisness as usual. After another few casts, he gets up to Cast again, rod behind shoulder, looking forward, All power and weight into it, and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!! Again!! :o again he hadnt lifted the bail arm, he had just loosened the drag so line could come free.. so after a few times listening to him murder his drag system, i go over, and tell him that you have to open the bail arm, in order to cast, not to just loosen the drag, and cast with it closed. . he said he was new to fishing, like i didnt already know… so i did the action of casting, showing him on My rod, then i get him to try on his. His first (real) cast, got to about 60-70m, And the look on his face, he didnt need to catch a fish after that, he was right chuffed with his cast, He thanks me in many different languages, and continues to do so, every time i go near him.

So didnt end up with any fish (the both of us) but was good to turn the tables, and become the teacher.. and the look on his face, was priceless..

unlike his drag system.

LOL, quality story, all too true 80% of the fisherman catch 20% of the fish as they say. I live in Petone but fish 95% in Kapiti and often take an amsuing stroll down the wharf to watch the majority of the 80%. At least his kit would have been Jarvis Walker (Rebel Sport Special).
